Chill Outz® is a method to guide children to calm state of mind and body (self-regulation). It is not a punishment or quick fix. It is an avenue for children to learn how to express their emotions effectively. Simply, children learn to be comfortable with all feelings and understand they can feel them and that they will pass. Regulating emotions is a life skill, important at any age.
In order to be most effective the app needs to be introduced and the techniques need to be practiced when the children are in a calm and relaxed state of mind. Introducing the app when a child is in upset will not work. The key to learning mindfulness in general and the app specifically is to practice it in a balanced mindset. Then, using the app and the techniques when the child is in an emotional state will enable him/her getting back into balance and self regulate his/her emotion.
We can not emphasize this enough. Chill Outz® is not a quick fix; it requires practice.Every day at a certain time play one of the stories (in large or small group or 1:1). Do the chosen Chill Outz® story with them. This will provide positive reinforcement. Do not expect the child to actively participate at first. They will benefit by attentively watching and listening. They will be rehearsing in their mind. You can follow along actively in order to model the optimal behavior. You can refer to the breath or motion during the day if a child needs help self regulating.
After viewing and the child is visibly calm, this is the perfect opportunity to talk about the feelings/behaviors you observed and how he/she was able to change them after using the chosen technique. Labeled praise is powerful reinforcement.
After a few viewings, the child will understand the expectations and be able to do this on their own. Note that some stories require more complicated learning and therefore will take more time to master. The goal is to practice and master these skills over time.
You can use Chill Outz® individually, with 2 to 3 children or with a small classroom. The child may use headphones or speakers. Headphones are a good choice if a quiet spot is difficult to find or if you do not want to distract others. Setting up a calm, quiet space will enhance the process. However, you can use Chill Outz® practically anywhere.
Once a child has become somewhat familiar with the Chill Outz® techniques you can start applying them whenever you see a child escalating emotionally; try a Chill Outz® skill as soon as possible. The objective is for children to learn to use the strategies before they reach the red zone.
Recommend that parents use Chill Outz® at home. The learning process will be accelerated and enhanced. Developing coping skills that are consistent at school and home will provide everyone with a win/win opportunity.
